Cary Grant

Let me talk about one person who completely stopped the casino action by their presence. Frank and the guys didn't because it was their place. They were around all the time. The Sands was a very relaxed place to be. Nobody bothered the entertainers or stars that came around. It was the place to be in Vegas.

Cary Grant, who actually came in a lot, usually around the back to go the the Regency Room, our gourmet room - at the time the best in Vegas. This time he comes in through the casino, around the end of the pit where the Wheels are. There are a lot of woman playing. One of them yells out "It's Cary Grant." She gets up and he stops. More get up and surround him. They are awestruck in seeing him and listening to him talk.

The Wheels are at the end of the 21 pit. So all the 21 players can see this and they start getting up going to him. Men and woman are going over to see and meet him. In a few minutes I got no players, a dead 21 pit. They're all down there looking at him.

They're so excited. He really looks like and talks like Cary Grant. They love it. I call security and they help get him to the Regency Room.

This reminds me of another story...

It's around the late 60s and I'm in the 21 pit. It's in the early afternoon. I get a page for me, It's Cary Grant, he's in London with the Faberge group. A cosmetic firm I think. He says he's been there and hasn't had a super meal. He want to take the group he is with to the Sands for Chinese food. He takes the Faberge jet to Vegas with about 10 people, has dinner in the Garden Room, Chinese of course. Back to the airport and back to London.

True story!

Cary Grant was a very good friend of Frank Sinatra. I'll tell you why. In the very early 60's "The Rat Pack" stuff started. I'm not sure everyone realizes it, but that at that time it was a very derogatory term. It was started by those in the eastern press, it was "Sinatra and his rat pack" We in Vegas never used or referred to it. I'll talk about that another time. Anyway, back to Cary and Frank being such good friends. You see, Frank and a lot of Vegas entertainers were looked down on by the Hollywood elite. Of course Frank was the chief bad guy. But some great actors themselves like Gary Grant, Gregory Peck, Kirk Douglas and some others, came to Vegas all the time to see Frank perform. They loved him and were in awe of his talent. And were not afraid to say so!!!!
