It's the early 60s and Frank is in house. Appearing here at The Sands. Around 10pm or so (between his shows), Mr Astaire comes in the Casino on the way to the Regency Room (our gourmet room). Such an unusual sight to see a man of his stature to be walking by himself. I watched him come around the pit and go to the Regency Room. A wonderful sight to see. So elegant and so graceful. I heard later that Sinatra was in the Garden Room having dinner with some friends and was told that Mr. Astaire was in the Regency Room also having dinner. I'm told, that when Sinatra heard this he got right up, leaving all his group there and went right to the Regency Room to say hello to Mr. Astaire. Later that night, actually early morning, 2-3 am, Frank is heading back to his place and comes around the Pit. I walk over to him. I'm still young and thin and a bit reserved with Sinatra. I'm standing between two 21 tables. I look at him and he comes over to me. I say "Mr. Astaire was in earlier." He say "Yeah I know." I start telling him that Mr. Astaire walked right by here and around the pit. As I describe it, I realized he listening to me AND is just as in awe of this event as I was. I tell how interesting it was to see the man and how impressive he looked. "Frank, there is something special about him. He has something, I don't know what you call it?" "It's call class, kid," Frank says "He's got it. Listen, when he's here, I don't want him presented with a bill or check of any kind. He's my guest. You understand." "Yes sir." I reply He's looking down the path Mr. Astaire must have walked and starts smiling. "He is class, kid, you'll hear all about his dancing. Next time listen to him sing." He starts down the path, around the pit, past the Roulette Wheels (same path Mr. Astaire took). As he heads up the two steps to the Lobby, he has a skip and a spring to his legs I haven't seen in quite a while. |
