More Frank & Judy

From my observations it was apparent that Frank had a special fondness for Judy Garland. Whenever she was in town, she would always come by the Sands. Frank treated her with such tenderness. He seemed very touched by her inability to handle life and its difficulties.

She, like Sammy resorted to desperate things to feel the joy of life.

They were both addicted to doing what it took to just feel good.

We in the Casino would look at that behavior as done by only weak, insecure people. At first I couldn't understand why Frank would allow that, so close to him.

But as I watched the comings and goings at The Sands, it became apparent that there was a side to Frank that was just not written about. Yes, he was this big star, a heavyweight talent and gave off a presence that was feared by many. But at the same time he seemed genuinely touched by the hurt and pain he would see others go through.

Frank has helped quite a few people here in Vegas. Of course it just isn't talked about. He won't permit it.

So that is a little of why he will do such nice things with a Judy Garland.

The other thing I saw was, he seemed so impressed with anyone with great talent. Anyone who might visit the Sands, and in those days everyone did, that was well known for something or was one of the best at some sport or activity, then you would see Frank with him or her. In the lounge or the Garden room. He really liked and appreciated talented people.

I was asked if I remember what they sang. I've seen them sing a few times. Usually it's her songs he would like to get into. She wanted to do his stuff.

I was asked about how great nights like these ended. The night I wrote about a few days ago ended like this. They had been going back and forth. The night was definitely comming to an end. One of Frank's friends yelled out for Judy to sing "Over The Rainbow." She started out and got into it. It was stunning. Everyone was in awe of this great talent. I can still see Frank sitting next to her with that smile that said "Ain't this something."

She goes awhile and invites Frank in and he joins her. Together they are thrilling. The entire Casino is watching this. They sing the song together for awhile. He picks a spot and pulls out and she heads on alone. She is belting it out at full bore. This 90 lbs, little lady has brought the entire joint to a stop.

She brings it to a end and everyone is standing and cheering, including Frank.

And they leave.
