Some of things he had done for others will never be told, but I will give you one I was involved with. It is so typical of Frank. Let's put this in perspective. It's the middle 60s. Frank is in house. Of course when he's here, it's wall to wall action in the casino. Everyone playing and having a good time. There is a Catholic priest here with some invited guests of Frank's. During the day he would walk around the casino without his collar and just be one of the guys. He would play 21, he didn't bet very much, but he was a very good player. A skill he learned, as he would say, in his younger days. One night he is at the table and Sinatra and the guys come and join him. They all play and some of them don't know he is a Priest and so at times the language is uncomfortable. The Priest and Frank would smile at each other and continue playing. The Priest is kidding about winning some money to pay for a fence or wall to be built around a schoolyard playground. He plays a while and stays at the table when Sinatra and his guys leave to go to the Garden Room. He doesn't do very well and the next day heads back to his home city. A few days later, Sinatra asks me how Father B. did. I tell him that he didn't lose anything, but didn't win very much. Sinatra doesn't seem too interested, but asks me if I remembered what the Father said about the wall. I told him I did. Sinatra asks me to check into it. I call Father B. and ask him how the schoolyard wall is coming and he tells me he will do a Bingo night to raise the money. I wish him luck. A few days later Sinatra asks me about it and I tell him what I know. He says "stay on top of it." Coming from Frank, I know what he means. A month later, I call Father B. and ask him how the Bingo night went and says he raised about $300. We talk a bit and again I wish him luck. He reminds me that the good Lord will look out for him. I relay the info to Sinatra. He seems pleased. I tell him about the Father telling me that the city says that without a wall being put up, the church cannot use it for a playground. The city will allow the playground to be used for parking only. Franks says "So where will the kids play?" I tell him I don't know. He tells me "Find out who the Father wants to build the wall." I ask Frank how does he want me to find that out. He says, like only he can, "Just do it." I call the Father and tell him I would send him a hundred to help and I need to know who would build it. He gives me the name and says the estimate is over $800. I give the info to Sinatra. Don't hear anything about it for a few months. One night I get a call in the Blackjack pit and it is from Father B. He is trying to get a hold of Sinatra to thank him for what he has done. He said that the wall was built around the playground and the Church never got a bill. He is sure Sinatra had something to do with it. I tell him that I never said that and it would be best that Mr. Sinatra's name not be mentioned. He said he told his parish about it. I tell him that I hoped he did not bring up Sinatra's name. He replied " I did not tell everything but I told the truth." "At Sunday services I announced to everyone that out new playground wall was a gift from someone. The Lord is always looking out for us and someone He loves very much has come to our aid." I told Frank what the Father said and he was very touched. He smiled and said "They're only kids, they need a place to play." Mr S. is no longer with us but I promise you there are many who will never forget him. |
